 Callers Are Reminded
All important information is provided to you in the Bow & Swing. Separate letters will not usually be mailed to each caller for each event! So let us each always keep up to date with what’s going on.

I had fun writing last month’s editorial as I wrote about the Florida State Square and Round Dance Convention and the fun we had, prior to attending. I can unequivocally state, JoAnn and I had a lot of fun. I am now writing this as we pack up and get ready for the 58th National Square Dance Convention in Long Beach, California. We will be joined by over 50 dancers from Florida as well as dancers from all over the world. Next year, The Florida State Square and Round Dance Convention will be our first “true” State Convention. This means that it won’t be hosted by just one regional association, but dancers from across the state. The theme of the 56th Florida State Square and Round Dance Convention is, “Everyday’s A Holiday When Your Dancing”. I know that many dancers have taken advantage of discounts and purchased their ribbons early. I would like to challenge clubs and dancer to sell enough early ribbons for 500 couples to be preregistered before next year’s convention. If we bring between one and two squares per club in Florida we will not only meet this goal, this goal will be exceeded. It was not that many years ago that clubs would compete for higher percentages or larger attendance numbers. Challenge your club to bring two or more squares to the convention. New and experienced dancers get together and dance and attend after parties.
At this years convention we had multiple workshops on “Dance by Definition”. Keith Stevens has written a nice follow up article for this issue of the magazine and I would like to add a few comments. Many Dancers and many callers share no interest in learning “Dance by Definition”. Many dancers and callers choose not even to work with left handed figures or any position other than the “normal” boy/girl relationship. However, it is easy to start using the terms, centers, ends, leaders and trailers. If you so choose, you do not have to go into detailed descriptions of leaders and trailers, use the KISS system (keep it simple sir). It is surprising how just a few words can influence dancers and even callers and improve the dancing floor. I’ll see you in a square and at next years State Convention.
